BRIDGING GENERATIONS: SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS APRIL 17 TO MAY 17, 2010 APRIL 17, SATURDAY - “BRIDGING GENERATIONS” GALA DINNER & DANCE Our month-long Centennial Celebration begins with a Gala Dinner and Dance (formal/ national dress, black-tie optional). Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres start at 6 p.m., followed by remarks at 6:30 and a catered dinner beginning at 7. Dancing to Mitzi Zilka and French Cafe will begin at 8. APRIL 24, SATURDAY– GRIEG LODGE MUSIC FESTIVAL: SHOWCASE OF NORWEGIAN MUSIC AND DANCE We will celebrate a century of Norwegian music and dance with a day-long variety showcase, highlighted with performances by noted dance groups and a concert by masters of authentic folk music, followed by a dance. Starting at 3 p.m., three of the Northwest’s best Scandinavian performing dance groups will be on stage: The Seattle Sons of Norway Leif Erickson Lodge Adult Leikarringen Dancers; The Nordlys Dancers from Vancouver, Washington, Columbia Lodge; and the Junction City Scandinavian Dancers. A light supper hosted by the Ladies Social Club will be available from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. ($5 per person) and the Concert will begin at 7 p.m. Dancing will begin at 9 p.m. No partner? No experience? Not a problem! Many of these dances are “called” and no partner is needed. For the “mixer” dances you’ll be paired with a more experienced dancer. Come enjoy all or any part of this day. National attire is encouraged but not required. APRIL 25, SUNDAY- SCHOLARSHIP BRUNCH ON SUNDAY This annual event is a fundraiser presented by Grieg Lodge’s Scholarship Fund. The Award Ceremony will take place at 11 a.m., and this year we are proudly presenting scholarships to three local students. The buffet menu includes our famous all-you-can-eat pancakes, with eggs, sausage, seasonal fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea, plus au gratin potatoes, riskrem and other favorites. And because it’s our 100th birthday we’ll top things off with blotkake, Norwegian birthday cake. Invite your friends and families to this very special day. MAY 2, SUNDAY – CENTENNIAL VIKING GAMES Bring the kids and a picnic for a sunny day of fun. We've reserved the track & field next to Benson High (behind the Portland Tennis Center - or Voodoo Donuts 2 - take your pick). We'll be playing ancient Viking games called Hunky Punk aka Doom Tug, and Gird & Cleek, as well as more modern Viking games like Nordic Urban Track Bowling (NUT Bowl). We'll also hurl some fish, play badminton and ultimate frisbee, race 3-legged and a lot more. Games are designed for all ages. Let's play the Viking way! The day starts at Norse Hall with a 5K fun run from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by a Biking Viking ride (prizes for best costumes and bike decorations!) from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Then we head to the field with our picnics, and an afternoon of sporty games from 1 to 4 p.m. All welcome. MAY 8, SATURDAY – LADIES SOCIAL CLUB Food DEMONSTRATION Learn to entertain the Norwegian way. The Ladies Social Club will show you how to prepare and serve some of Norway’s favorite dishes, and you’ll also see how to set a traditional Norwegian table for dinner or coffee. There will be a Smorgasbord sampling of all these delicious foods: MAY 9, SUNDAY – MOTHER’S DAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST
MAY 17, MONDAY – SYTTENDE MAI 2010 – NORWEGIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY Before the parade traditional Norwegian foods and beverages will be available to purchase. At 7 p.m. after the parade, Little Leikarringen performs, followed by a special “Lapskaus Cabaret,” a lively stew of Norwegian theater, music, comedy and dance. Performing in our cabaret will be local Norwegians with traditional and specially commissioned pieces, including: acclaimed choreographer Lane Hunter; award-winning playwright William S. Gregory; noted actor and former host of OPB’s radio morning newscast Gray Eubank; and choreographer and multi-disciplined performing artist Virginia Belt. We’ll conclude the evening with the installation of a “time capsule.”
Grieg Lodge adventurers and friends will hike the Pilegrimsleden, a.k.a. Pilgrim’s Way, following the medieval pilgrimage route from Oslo to the shrine of St. Olav at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. This odyssey covers a distance of 400 miles through the heart of Norway. Options abound for participating in portions of the route to suit individual interests and abilities.
