We will celebrate a century of Norwegian music and dance with a day-long variety showcase, highlighted with performances by noted dance groups and a concert by masters of authentic folk music, followed by a dance.
This not-to-be-missed day begins at 1pm with The Norsemen, a men’s choral group from Eugene. Following will be our children’s dance group, the Little Leikarringens, who will delight us with a performance of traditional folk dances. Classical pianist Molly Beiningen will perform music written by Agathe Backer-Grondahl, one of Norway’s most famous women composers.

Starting at 3 p.m., three of the Northwest’s best Scandinavian performing dance groups will be on stage: The Seattle Sons of Norway Leif Erickson Lodge Adult Leikarringen Dancers; The Nordlys Dancers from Vancouver, Washington, Columbia Lodge; and the Junction City Scandinavian Dancers.

A light supper hosted by the Ladies Social Club will be available from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. ($5 per person) and the Concert will begin at 7 p.m. Dancing will begin at 9 p.m. No partner? No experience? Not a problem! Many of these dances are “called” and no partner is needed. For the “mixer” dances you’ll be paired with a more experienced dancer. Come enjoy all or any part of this day. National attire is encouraged but not required.

And because it’s our 100th birthday we’ll top things off with blotkake, Norwegian birthday cake. Invite your friends and families to this very special day.

MAY 16 & 17 – NORSK ARTS FAIR
Lodge Room 1-5 p.m Sunday & 4-9pm Monday

Local artists/artisans of all things Norwegian & Nordic will have booths and demonstrations of both fine arts and traditional/contemporary crafts. One of the highlights of this 2-day arts and crafts fair will be “Bunad Village”, a display of materials used in the construction of bunads - everything from fabrics to jewelry - books and bunads on hangers and dress forms. Experts in the history and making of bunads and bunad elements will be on hand. You may even find the inspiration to make your own! We’ll even have a special area where lodge members will be invited to share their own family memorabilia. This is an excellent opportunity to introduce your friends and neighbors to the richness of Norwegian culture.

MAY 17, MONDAY – SYTTENDE MAI 2010 – NORWEGIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY
Doors open at 4 p.m. Parade starts at 6 p.m.
No Charge

Our month of festivities culminates with the traditional all-lodge parade from Norse Hall through the Lloyd District and back. The Benson High School Band will lead this grand flag parade, with nationally-costumed lodge members and friends, and classic/antique cars behind. This patriotic, colorful extravaganza has been sponsored by Grieg Lodge for generations and is for all the community to enjoy.

Before the parade traditional Norwegian foods and beverages will be available to purchase. At 7 p.m. after the parade, Little Leikarringen performs, followed by a special “Lapskaus Cabaret,” a lively stew of Norwegian theater, music, comedy and dance. Performing in our cabaret will be local Norwegians with traditional and specially commissioned pieces, including: acclaimed choreographer Lane Hunter; award-winning playwright William S. Gregory; noted actor and former host of OPB’s radio morning newscast Gray Eubank; and choreographer and multi-disciplined performing artist Virginia Belt. We’ll conclude the evening with the installation of a “time capsule.”
